Art as Emotional Expression: Drawing the Line

September 22, 2024

Art as Emotional Expression: Drawing the Line

Art holds an incredible power; it goes beyond just colors and lines on a canvas. For many of us, it’s a lifeline—a means to express emotions that words often struggle to capture. In this post, I want to share my personal journey with art as a tool for self-expression. It has been instrumental in helping me set boundaries while navigating the complexities of mental health.

Whether you’re a coffee lover, pet lover, toy collector, illustrator, book enthusiast, mug collector, or simply someone searching for a way to express themselves, I believe my story will resonate with you. Embracing art has not only allowed me to explore my creativity but has also offered moments of clarity and healing. I hope my experiences inspire you to embrace your own creative journey and find joy in self-expression. Remember, every brushstroke is a step toward understanding yourself better. Keep exploring and creating—you’ve got this!

My Journey with Art and Boundaries

I’ve always found joy in creating cute, cheerful illustrations filled with smiling faces or neutral expressions. These designs, especially for my art merchandise, capture the positivity I aspire to share with the world. However, as any artist knows, the outward portrayal often hides a deeper truth. Lately, I’ve been wrestling with my own thoughts, grappling with the denial that these issues have affected me. I often find myself frustrated, questioning why I allowed such concerns to infiltrate my mind and heart.

When I look back at my journal entries, it’s clear there’s a stark contrast between how I present myself to the outside world and what I feel inside. My doodles reveal a spectrum of emotions—anger, sadness, and disappointment—feelings I’ve kept hidden, afraid to show any negativity. But I’ve come to realize that embracing vulnerability can lead to growth. It’s okay to acknowledge these emotions; they are part of my journey. I encourage you to explore your own feelings, too. By being open about our struggles, we can foster a deeper connection with ourselves and others, and ultimately find joy in the creative process. Remember, it’s in these moments of honesty that we truly discover our strength and potential for self-improvement.

The Realization and Shift

Suppressing these darker emotions only made them more insistent, demanding to be heard and seen. This realization prompted a pivotal shift in my art. I began incorporating designs that acknowledged these complex feelings, not just the happy ones. This process was a form of therapy, allowing me to draw boundaries and express my entire emotional spectrum.

Art as a Tool for Mental Health

Using art to process emotions has been a game-changer for my mental health. It’s a safe space to explore feelings without judgment, offering a therapeutic outlet that words often fail to provide.

Creating Designs for Self-Expression

With my newfound understanding, I started creating designs that reflected moments of vulnerability and strength. These weren’t just drawings; they were declarations of my boundaries and emotional states. Each piece became a statement of self-expression and mental health awareness.

The Importance of Boundaries in Art and Life

Setting boundaries is crucial, both in art and life. It involves recognizing what you are comfortable sharing and what you need to keep private. By drawing these lines, you protect your mental well-being and foster healthier relationships with yourself and others.

Connecting with Others Through Art

Sharing my more vulnerable designs opened up conversations with others who were grappling with similar feelings. Art became a bridge, connecting me with a community of individuals who found solace in expressing their darker emotions.

The Role of Art Merchandise

My stationary merchandise— stickers, bookmark and notepad—has always been about spreading joy. But now, it also includes pieces that speak to the complexity of human emotions. These items serve as daily reminders that it’s okay to feel deeply and to assert your boundaries.

Practical Tips for Using Art for Self-Expression

  1. Start a Journal: Begin with a journal dedicated to your artistic expressions. Allow yourself to doodle freely, without judgment.
  2. Explore Different Mediums: Experiment with various mediums—paint, digital art, charcoal. Find what resonates with your emotional state.
  3. Set Aside Time: Dedicate time each day or week for your art practice. Consistency helps in processing emotions effectively.
  4. Share Selectively: Decide what parts of your art you want to share and what you want to keep private. This helps in maintaining personal boundaries.
  5. Seek Feedback: Connect with other artists or friends who understand your journey. Constructive feedback can be incredibly validating.

Encouraging Self-Expression in Others

By sharing my own experiences, I hope to encourage others to explore self-expression through art. Whether you’re a seasoned illustrator or a beginner, the act of creating can be profoundly healing.yhu

The Emotional Impact of Art

Art has a unique ability to evoke and process emotions. For those of us who use it as a tool for self-expression, it becomes a powerful method for understanding and coping with our feelings.

The Future of My Art

Moving forward, I aim to balance my cheerful designs with those that reflect a broader emotional spectrum. This inclusivity not only honors my personal journey but also resonates with a wider audience.

Final Thoughts

Art is a dynamic and powerful medium for self-expression and mental health. By acknowledging and depicting the full range of our emotions, we create meaningful connections with ourselves and others. If my story resonates with you, I invite you to explore your own artistic boundaries and see where it leads.

This journey of drawing boundaries through art has been transformative for me, and I hope it inspires you to pick up your own creative tools. For more insights and personal stories, stay connected with our community and continue exploring the world of self-expression art.

100 Days of Digital Illustration – A Creative Challenge

April 9, 2023

After a long absence, I’m back with an exciting new project to jumpstart my creativity – the 100 day illustration challenge! This is more than just completing another task; it’s about reigniting that passion within me and feeling proud of what I can accomplish. With this goal in mind, here’s hoping for fulfilling days ahead as an artist on the rise!

Introducing my 100 day illustration challenge

I started the challenge on March 30th, rather than wait for a new month to begin and kick off my challenge then, I decided that day was the perfect time to get started. No matter when you start something important in life – it’s always the right moment!

How I chose my subject and medium for the project

Instead of being confined to one location or space, I decided to explore digital illustration using an iPad and Adobe Fresco as a medium that can be accessed anywhere. For the project’s subject, I am focusing on female portraits with simple and achievable details. Something that is doable and creating 100 illustrations over the next hundred days!

How I overcame my creative blocks and plans to continue working hard for the next 90 days

Plan at-least the next 7 days of the challenge – sketch out a few ideas and plan ahead. Consider this exercise as a warm up activity. With careful preparation, you’ll be able to create your artwork with ease and confidence!

Rather than worrying about how your work measures up to that of others, close out the world and remember what you already know – trust in yourself! Don’t be afraid to take inspiration from those around you but don’t let it overshadow your own inner voice; when the time comes, dig deep for something original.

Embrace your creative spark! When you’ve finished a piece, take the time to admire and appreciate all that it took for you to make it. Instead of focusing on what could have been done differently or better, focus instead on all that was accomplished – no matter how small and share it to the world 🙂

The learning 🙂

If you’re searching for a way to better yourself, to discover your creative potential, the 100 days challenge can be a great start. No matter what the subject is, focus on what you can accomplish and even if it feels insignificant or small; recognize that being able to achieve something means you have made progress. Trust in your own creativity and don’t be afraid to be vulnerable with others by sharing your explorations as you grow. Even when comparing yourself against others, remember that growth is a personal experience- one that may have milestones but also require patience and diligence. Believe in your creative spark and plan ahead for each of your goals not just so you stay motivated, but more importantly to celebrate the many small wins along the way! Start small and do it now– instead of wondering “what if” create the future you wish to see!

Being an artist is a mindset. It’s a lifestyle commitment.

Dubai Miracle Garden – Design and Pattern

April 10, 2021

Finding your own inspiration is one of the best things that I learned from Bonnie Christine. Since then, I have been more observant and mindful in searching for inspiration and elements for future artworks and pattern designs. In my recent visit to Dubai Miracle Garden, I took a lot of photos for reference to create artworks.

As promised here are few artworks and a pattern that I have created I still intend to create a cohesive pattern collection, it might take time but I’m getting there. I hope you will like it.

I’m going to make everything around me beautiful, that will be my life.

Learning Surface Pattern Design

June 19, 2020

During the pandemic quarantine, I spent my time learning surface pattern design. I have surrounded myself with flowers, foliage, blobs, lines and shapes. I started sketching, filling botanical elements on my art boards and keeping the right amount of space to have the right balance. Whoa.. do I sound like a pro? Hmmmm…. I’m not! I would say not yet…

Before the Covid 19 pandemic forced us to stay at home, it is sooo timely that I enrolled to the Immersion Surface Pattern Design class of Bonnie Christine. Immersion is an online class offered by Bonnie ONLY once in a year.

It is not an easy decision for me to take the Immersion course as there was an investment involved. The Immersion course of Learning Surface Pattern Design wasn’t cheap, my love.. t’was not!!! But is it worth it? Hell yah!!! More than I paid for! The timing was so perfect since working from home had given me extra hours to study and create more arts.

Immersion is not just an online classroom. Immersion is a community of dreamers, doers and believers that anybody can be a designer. Anybody! Many members are 50  years old above and some of them does not even have a background in design and Adobe Illustrator but I am stunned with their progress. Bonnie’s approach is encouraging. No wonder she’s able to create a community with abundant mindset and can do attitude.

In Immersion course she shared her story, her process of sourcing inspiration, how to use Adobe Illustrator, how to create a pattern, how to market yourself,  et cetera… et cetera….

So far.. here are the patterns that I have created. My patterns are very simple but I’m happy that I started creating patterns.  Before Immersion I didn’t see myself to be able to create such designs. It look simple but I’m learning.

My goals are to learn and create various pattern compositions, create pattern collections, work with brands that I believe and support,  license my collections and earn a recurring passive income. I know it’s overwhelming but I believe that it is achievable. Just like Bonnie said… One Thing a Day.

Thank you Bonnie and to your team! Thank you for sharing your experience and your journey to us. I hope that one day I am able to meet you and personally say thank you for inspiring and directing us to the right path. A day will come and we will pay forward the learnings that you have shared. Thank you.

Digital portraits with elements

To my readers and followers, thank you for your support.  Maybe you are my family member or a friend or you just bump into my blog, but hey Thank you for reading this post. I hope that you are able to bring out the creative part in you. It will be quite a journey but I am very sure that you will love it.

Dubai Parking Meter Project

February 29, 2020

I received a message in my Instagram later last year asking if I do digital illustration and if I am based in Dubai. A casual question from a random stranger online, I winked as I typed my response…. “Yes. I do”. A response and a self encouragement at the same time.

She introduced herself and mentioned that she is from Brand Dubai. They are working in a project and in need of illustrators.  Gulp… an illustrator??? Big word!

She said that if I am interested, she will send me the project details. Again… I said Yes… but this time, my hands are sweaty. I’m scared and intimidated. Tried to brush off the feeling while waiting for the email. Ding…. (that is an an email notification)

I read it over… and over… and over again. Brand Dubai invited me to submit my illustration designs for the parking meter project.  I doubted myself… not sure if I can commit.  Blessed that I am surrounded with positive people and before I beat my self-confidence, my husband was already celebrating.  Excitement, anxiety and happiness filled up my heart! I am not dreaming… this is a reality and this is happening!!!

This experience brought me out of my comfort zone.  I immediately started to brain storm for ideas, we walked on the busy streets in Deira, Jumeirah and Sheikh Zayed to find inspiration. I drew and drew until early morning and my eyes were out. I thought of this project even at work. Skipped the weekend stroll to finish the artworks.

The BUS artwork is inspired from my early days in Dubai as it was the main transportation I use to bring me to my destination. In the bus you will see people from all walks of life from Asian, Arabs, European and Westerns. Name it we have it 🙂 Dubai is a multicultural city made up of diverse cultures, skills and talent from across the globe.
Claw machine just makes me smile. It’s cuteness and fun vibe of the artwork was inspired by different nationalities harmoniously working together in making Dubai a fun City to work and live in.

To put it briefly, I submitted my design and they loved it.  In collaboration with six Emirati and expatriate artists, Brand Dubai  partners with RTA Dubai to create new art experiences in the city’s parking spaces.  Around 100 parking meters in Jumeirah, Dubai Media City, DIFC and Al Mustaqbal Street have been enlivened with 15 artworks inspired by themes of diversity and tolerance.

Thank you Brand Dubai, RTA Dubai and Dubai Media office the opportunity. To Ms. Fatma Al Mulla, this Project will not be successful without your kindred spirit and hard work.
