Learning Surface Pattern Design

June 19, 2020

During the pandemic quarantine, I spent my time learning surface pattern design. I have surrounded myself with flowers, foliage, blobs, lines and shapes. I started sketching, filling botanical elements on my art boards and keeping the right amount of space to have the right balance. Whoa.. do I sound like a pro? Hmmmm…. I’m not! I would say not yet…

Before the Covid 19 pandemic forced us to stay at home, it is sooo timely that I enrolled to the Immersion Surface Pattern Design class of Bonnie Christine. Immersion is an online class offered by Bonnie ONLY once in a year.

It is not an easy decision for me to take the Immersion course as there was an investment involved. The Immersion course of Learning Surface Pattern Design wasn’t cheap, my love.. t’was not!!! But is it worth it? Hell yah!!! More than I paid for! The timing was so perfect since working from home had given me extra hours to study and create more arts.

Immersion is not just an online classroom. Immersion is a community of dreamers, doers and believers that anybody can be a designer. Anybody! Many members are 50  years old above and some of them does not even have a background in design and Adobe Illustrator but I am stunned with their progress. Bonnie’s approach is encouraging. No wonder she’s able to create a community with abundant mindset and can do attitude.

In Immersion course she shared her story, her process of sourcing inspiration, how to use Adobe Illustrator, how to create a pattern, how to market yourself,  et cetera… et cetera….

So far.. here are the patterns that I have created. My patterns are very simple but I’m happy that I started creating patterns.  Before Immersion I didn’t see myself to be able to create such designs. It look simple but I’m learning.

My goals are to learn and create various pattern compositions, create pattern collections, work with brands that I believe and support,  license my collections and earn a recurring passive income. I know it’s overwhelming but I believe that it is achievable. Just like Bonnie said… One Thing a Day.

Thank you Bonnie and to your team! Thank you for sharing your experience and your journey to us. I hope that one day I am able to meet you and personally say thank you for inspiring and directing us to the right path. A day will come and we will pay forward the learnings that you have shared. Thank you.
